Remembrances are augmented by excerpts from various plays and novels, familyBible records (photostated earlier and separately as Accession 22003), a blank form on which to register as an oyster tongman, quotes about women's virtues, etc., a printed poem, and land tax receipts.

Towles describes himself as weighing 145 1/2 pounds and having a chest measurement of 36 1/2 inches (page 106) in 1859. A Confederate soldier of Company D, Ninth Regiment, Virginia Cavalry. Shortly after the 1863 death of General "Stonewall" Jackson, Towles was attacked while in a saloon and, after throwing whiskey and pepper in the eyes of his antagonist, ran and eluded capture dressed as a female.
